Perhaps the most contentious issue surrounding cell phone towers is the potential health risks associated with electromagnetic radiation.
While the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established guidelines for radiation exposure those guidelines are largely based on legacy legislation and technology. The FCC’s human exposure limits for the RF microwaves emitted by 5G, 4G, cell towers, cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, smart devices and wireless networks date back to 1996. The limits are irrelevant to modern-day technologies and do not reflect the way people are exposed to RF and actually use technology in the 21st century.
New research on the health impacts of electromagnetic fields (EMF) is ongoing, and while some studies suggest that the levels emitted by cell towers are below harmful thresholds, others indicate potential risks.
Both the FCC and Food and Drug Administration websites dismiss the existence of any special health risk to children. By contrast, more than 20 foreign governments have adopted protective measures or recommended precautions. Numerous countries have cell tower network radiofrequency radiation (RF) limits (maximum permissible limits) 10 to 100 times below FCC limits or they have policies to reduce exposure near schools and/or homes designated as “sensitive” areas
Electromagnetic Radiation: 5G technology operates at higher frequencies than previous generations, which may lead to higher levels of electromagnetic radiation. While scientific consensus on the long-term health effects of such radiation is still evolving, some studies suggest potential links to various health issues, including:
Increased Sensitivity Among Children: Children are generally more sensitive to environmental changes due to their developing bodies and higher rates of cell division. The American Academy of Pediatrics states children are more vulnerable to wireless radiation. Children receive proportionately higher exposures into their more sensitive brain tissue and organs. This heightened sensitivity can potentially increase their vulnerability to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by 5G cell towers.
Potential Impacts on Immune System: There is ongoing research into how EMFs might affect immune system function. Some studies suggest potential impacts on immune responses.
Proximity to Residential Areas: Placing a 5G tower near residential areas, particularly where children play and families spend time, raises concerns about potential health risks due to proximity and exposure duration.
Vulnerable Populations: In addition to children, other vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, may have heightened sensitivities to EMFs.
